So. much. fun. I fucking loved it! The papers were so interesting! A few highlights:

  • Someone compared Davros to Bill O'Reilly. XD He was comparing Daleks to couch-potatoes/mindless human automotons and how the show portrayed this in Bad Wolf and The Parting of Ways. The paper was really fascinating even if it was really obvious in the episodes. Humans becoming mindless Daleks/automotons reminded me of the Toclafane, so I mentioned them and The Master because there were no mentions of The Master, or the second or third series really, and I felt like it had to be done. I kind of want to write a paper about Doctor/Master and present it at an undergrad panel next year. Either that or Strangers With Candy, which would probably be more interesting. Anyway,
  • The first person I talked to (who was one of the area chairs) pointed out that one of the perks in Torchwood was all the boy-kissing.
  • One of the papers talked about slash, even though it was kind of obvious that the guy didn't read slash, it was still awesome to hear a 'scholar' talk about it.
  • The whole thing was just really fucking awesome. I absolutely loved geeking out over Doctor Who with other people who knew what I was talking about. And I learned some new stuff about the fan driven DW productions and spin-offs which was super interesting.
  • Oh, and one of the panelists used this hil-AR-ious picture of Rusty when she started talking about him. I made a bit of a fool of myself and giggled over it. And later on I almost called him Rusty when I pointed out the Toclafane, but I stopped myself so I wouldn't look like a complete fool.

We also went to a Dracula panel, which was actually really boring. I'm tired of Dracula. And the papers just weren't that good, their readings either sucked, or had already been done before. I'm sure Haley will rant about it, at length, in her LJ.

Tomorrow the only things I'm really looking forward to is Haley's panel and this one paper about Life On Mars. Haley wants to stay till like, 10:00 p.m., so when Jasie and I don't have any interesting panels to go to we'll just go shopping.

We got to San Francisco safely today, and the Beatles panel that we went to was awesome. These Beatles scholars were freaking geniuses and we were just in awe of these people that knew so so much about The Beatles. We wanted to talk to the panelists, but we were just so intimidated by how awesome they were, so we didn't.

I thought I had more to say, but I'm really tired, and we gotta get up at 6:00 tomorrow to get there by 8:00 for the Doctor Who panel. I gotta get some sleep.

Tomorrow I am going to a panel called Science Fiction and Fantasy I: Across the Who-niverse: Inspecting Dr. Who and it Spin-offs.

OMG I am so excited! Papers will include:

"This Planet Has Four Walls: How Early Doctor Who Narrative Was Influenced by Techniques and Technology to Overcome the Confines of Studio Recording"

and

"Alien Sex: Torchwood, the Erotics of Technology, and the Configuration of Human Emotion"

Dude. I am geeking out so hard over this right now. :D

Oh, and tonight we're going to a Beatles panel! Which will have a paper called Thinking the Unthinkable about John Lennon, which just amuses me, because what's unthinkable about him now? Everybody's thought the unthinkable about him, his entire personal life was on display. I'm hoping the paper will be about how gay he was.

I've been playing this Clone Wars card game with Sigrid's son, and there's a character that I never heard of called Senator Tikkes, but I keep on reading it as Senator Tikkles. So Senator Tikkles is my new favorite Star Wars character.
Jasie: *pinches my arm HARD*

Me: *looks up* What the fuck is your problem?!

I forgot it was St. Patrick's Day. That is usually my first statement of the day every year, but with a different person pinching me.

I'm watching National Treasure right now, and wow. Wow. My first assumptions regarding the movie were totally right. It is incredibly stupid. The plot is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard, and I have no idea why it was so popular. Was it the 'humor'? Or perhaps the raw sex appeal of an aged Nick Cage?

I think the founding fathers probably had more important shit to do than to hide treasure and create elaborate riddles and clues leading to said treasure. I just could not suspend my disbelief because I just kept on asking myself, "WHY WOULD THEY HIDE TREASURE AND SCATTER CLUES ALL OVER PHILADELPHIA?! DIDN'T THEY HAVE A GODDAMN NATION TO BUILD?!"

Also, a loud annoying soundtrack can't create suspense or adventure by itself, but kudos to the person who wrote the score for trying.

Oh!

( Mar. 15th, 2008 08:29 pm)
I remember the thing that I wanted to post about! EVERYTHING HERE IS GREEN! It's amazing! All I've seen for the past 9 months is snow or ugly ugly brown hills, so the green was really shocking. The hills up here are just this gorgeous vivid green that's just astounding!

Haley said in the car that our family consists of two stems: people who belong in Utah, and people who belong in California, and we're part of the California stem, and I totally agree. I didn't really realize how much I missed this state until today. I don't want to move back in the near future, but I want to eventually. I definitely want to come back to the Bay Area more than just once every 5 years.

We made it to California safely, and it was surprisingly one of the easiest road trips I've been on. It was 11 hours, and usually when I'm in a car for more than 8 hours I want to kill myself, but this time wasn't that bad. :D

I only got three hours of sleep last night, so I am just incredibly exhausted. I am just sooo sleepy right now. I wanted to post more but I just don't have the energy right now. I'm just going to go look at my f-list.

EDIT: Oh! I forgot to ask! Is anybody going to the PCA/ACA thing in San Francisco? It's basically a fan convention, but nerdier and without celebrities.

Well, we'll be leaving in about 5 1/2 hours, and I'm wide awake. Tomorrow should be fun, driving across the desert on less than 5 hours of sleep. I do have a few things to entertain me for the long ride though. I downloaded two Big Finish Audio Adventures featuring Five and Turlough, I have to read a Dan Savage book for American Institutions (Dude, how awesome is it that I get to read a Dan Savage book for my history class?!), and I have to read an article called Capitalism and Gay Identity for a paper that I have to write. I also have The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy Series audiobooks to listen to. I think I'll be entertained for the car ride. :)

Oh, and my brother-in-law is the gayest straight man in the history of the entire world. That is a link to his post of his top ten sexiest men, and it is an incredibly hot list. And his comments are incredibly gay.
